Subterranean Termites threaten homeowners all over the US. Because they eat non-stop (24/7) using their saw-like teeth, they can cause significant damage to buildings and structures over time, even causing total collapse. When it comes to protection, prevention is key with any type of termite.

Signs of a Subterranean Termite Infestation

Infestations can occur on the inside or outside of a structure. It is important to look for the telltale signs that subterranean termites have found their way to your residential or commercial structure.

Mud Tubes

Mud tubes look like small, long tunnels along the exterior surfaces of a home or building. These tubes are constructed of wood by the termites as a method of protection as they travel. These tubes keep the termites from drying out since they enjoy moist cellulose-rich products.

Discarded Subterranean Termite Wings

Once swarmers have entered or infested a home, they discard their wings. These discarded wings can be found on windowsills and near doors.

Changes in the Structure

Once subterranean termites have infested a home or commercial building, you may notice signs of damage. It is important to note the sagging or buckling of floors, or any softening of wood in the structure. Hollow-sounding wood in the walls when tapped, darkening or blistering of visible wood. Uneven or bubbling paint is another sign to look for. You may even notice a substance resembling sawdust if there is a nest nearby, this sawdust is actually termite feces.

Habits of Subterranan Termites

Subterranean termites go through phases that we refer to as swarmer season. In Florida, the swarmer season typically occurs in late winter. Swarmer season refers to a period of time when groups of winged reproductive termites leave an existing colony to start new colonies. While late winter in Florida can be unpredictable, you may see swarmers during the day, and especially during the morning following a day of warm rainy weather.
