Ghost ants are not dangerous, don’t cause physical harm to people, nor cause property damage. That doesn’t mean they would be welcome inside our homes. Ghost Ants can contaminate food sources and spread bacteria. Ghost ants are tiny and difficult to see. Their colonies have multiple queens which is the main reason they are difficult to eradicate.

Signs of a Ghost Ant Infestation

Infestations can occur on the inside or outside of your home or business. These ants feed on many household foods but show a particular preference for sweets like sugar, cakes, and syrups.

When crushed the Ghost worker ant will emit an odor similar to that of rotten coconuts.

Ghost Ants will nest inside your home. You will see signs of nested colonies in wall voids, behind baseboards, between cabinets, inside the soil of potted plants, and anywhere near water sources.

Habits of Ghost Ants

Ghost ants thrive in humid weather, making Florida the perfect climate to build colonies. They are fond of honeydew and also feed on both dead and living insects. They are most commonly found in kitchens near food sources.
