Mosquito Season: When You’re Itching For A Solution

The summer is all fun and games until the mosquitoes decide to join the family festivities.

Slapping at your arms and knees and swearing off the backyard for the remainder of your day, it can be hard to deny that mosquitoes are often capable of sucking the joy out of an outdoor experience, particularly if you forgot to pack the repellant.

And mosquitoes aren’t just renowned for their insufferable numbers and aptitude for creating heightened discomfort. Here’s what else you need to know about mosquito season and how to protect yourself …

Mosquito Season 101

In a climate as naturally warm and humid as Florida’s, mosquitoes are relatively present year-round, leaving the state’s inhabitants with irritating itches to scratch no matter the month.

That being said, Florida’s mosquito season spans a similar timeframe to that of hurricane season, seeing as the summer months bear far more rain and, thus, far more opportunities for mosquitoes to breed en masse.

June through October are typically when Floridians will want to be mindful to have bug spray on-hand, although starting mosquito treatments as early as March can help prevent the chances of dealing with these pests once the rainy months settle in later in the year, especially as the weather can start to take a warmer turn as early as autumn.

Mosquitoes and the Diseases They Carry

Mosquito bites in and of themselves are bothersome, but it pays to remember that mosquitoes carry more than just a bad reputation — they can also carry disease.

“Mosquito-borne diseases found in Florida include West Nile virus, eastern equine encephalitis, and St. Louis encephalitis,” according to the Florida Department of Health. “Many other mosquito-borne diseases are found in different parts of the world, and can be brought back to Florida if infected people or animals are bitten by mosquitoes while in Florida.”

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) also tracks the occurrence of these mosquito-borne diseases across the country and offers advice on how best to prevent infection.
