Mosquitoes

  • Color: Mostly grey, white, or brown
  • Size: 1/4 to 3/8 inch long
  • Legs: 6
  • Antennae: Yes
  • Shape: Narrow, long and oval
  • Region: US (and Florida)

Avoiding mosquitoes and their bites is a way of life in Northeast Florida. The primary concerns are the number of diseases they are known to carry, including malaria, yellow fever, dengue, encephalitis, Chikungunya, West Nile, and of growing concern in the US, Zika.

Besides a mosquito management company, preventing bites, and breeding grounds are your best options for the protection of your home and loved ones. If you live in Florida, then you know mosquitoes are nearby, either on your property, your neighbor’s property, or that unattended retention pond in the middle of your subdivision.

Types of Mosquitoes in Florida

There are 170 types of mosquitoes in the US with two species feeding on human blood and leading to bites and diseases. The culex mosquito can be found in Florida and is one of the species known to feed on human blood and is capable of spreading and/or transmitting diseases.

Habits of Culex Mosquitoes

The culex mosquito’s primary duty is to feed, breed, and repeat. They are most active in the pursuit of their duties at dawn and dusk. This, in addition to their small size, is why it is often difficult to spot them until they’ve landed and are feeding.

Florida is a particularly favorable environment for mosquitoes to breed, as they are attracted to warm and moist environments.
